TAPE CASTING AND SINTERING OF IMPROVED ALUMINA SUBSTRATES FOR USE IN ELECTRONIC CIRCUITRY.

Cel

DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNIQUES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF IMPROVED THIN AND THICK FILM SUBSTRATES, THIS MARKET BEING ALMOST COMPLETELY DEPENDENT ON EXTRA-EUROPEAN IMPORTS.

THE PROJECT WILL BE DIVISED INTO FOUR PARTS:
1. SLURRIES FORMULATION AND PROCESSING
THE RESEARCH WILL BE DIRECTED TO ACQUIRE A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THIN FILM SLURRY FORMULATION AND PROCESSING. AT THE SAME TIME, THE PROBLEMS CONCERNING THICK FILM (96% ALO2O3) SLURRY FORMULATION WILL BE STUDIED WITH THE AIM OF IDENTIFYING THE INORGANIC ADDITIVES (SIO2, CAO, MGO, ETC), AND ORGANIC SOLVENTS, BINDERS AND PLASTICIZERS WHICH ARE NECESSARY TO DEVELOP SLURRIES WITH THE PROPER CHARACTERISTICS FOR TAPE CASTING. PARTICULARLY IN THE CASE OF THICK FILM SUBSTRATES, THE ECONOMIC ASPECT OF THE CHOICE OF THE AUXILIARY MATERIALS WILL BE OF RELEVANT IMPORTANCE.
2. TAPE CASTING
ALL THE OPERATIVE CONDITIONS SUCH AS CASTING THICKNESS AND SPEED, CARRIER FILM, PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, DRYING CYCLE, ETC. WILL BE EXTENSIVELY INVESTIGATED AND CONTROLLED. IN PARTICULAR, THE INFLUENCE OF OPERATIVE CONDITIONS WILL HAVE TO BE EVALUATED FOR EACH SLURRY FORMULATION, IN ORDER TO AVOID CRACKING OF THE TAPE IN THE DRYING PHASE.
3. SINTERING
FOR THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE FIRING CYCLE, A SUITABLE BATCH TYPE COMBUSTION SYSTEM WILL HAVE TO BE UTILIZED. OWING TO THE VERY HIGH STANDARDS REQUIRED FOR SUBSTRATES (FLATNESS, SMOOTHNESS AND COMPLETE ABSENCE OF SURFACE DEFECTS), PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE DEVOTED TO THE SUPPORTING REFRACTORIES BOTH FROM THE TECHNICAL AND THE ECONOMIC POINTS OF VIEW. IN THIS RESPECT, AN EXPERIMENTAL ACTIVITY WILL BE DEVELOPED IN ORDER TO MAKE SUITABLE REFRACTORY SYSTEMS FOR SUPPORTING SUBSTRATES.
4. CHARACTERIZATION OF FINAL PRODUCTS
THIN AND THICK FILM MATERIALS AND SUBSTRATES WILL BE EXAMINED BY X-RAY DIFFRACTION AND SEM MICROGRAPHIES. DIMENSIONAL MEASUREMENTS, FLATNESS, ROUGHNESS, APPARENT DENSITY, POROSITY AND SURFACE DEFECTS WILL ALSO BE EXAMINED. MOREOVER, RELIABILITY AND WORKING TESTS WILL BE PERFORMED BY SUPPLYING TEST BATCHES TO POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS.
4. CHARACTERIZATION OF FINAL PRODUCTS
THIN AND THICK FILM MATERIALS AND SUBSTRATES WILL BE EXAMINED BY X-RAY DIFFRACTION AND SEM MICROGRAPHIES. DIMENSIONAL MEASUREMENTS, FLATNESS, ROUGHNESS, APPARENT DENSITY, POROSITY AND SURFACE DEFECTS WILL ALSO BE EXAMINED. MOREOVER, RELIABILITY AND WORKING TESTS WILL BE PERFORMED BY SUPPLYING TEST BATCHES TO POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS.

PART OF THE LABORATORY CHARACTERIZATION ACTIVITY WILL BE PERFORMED AT THE "INSTITUTO PER LA RICHERCHE TECHNOLOGICHE SULLA CERAMICA" DI FAENZA (CNR).
