Innovative Abradable/abrasive Materials For Improved Energy Efficiency In Gas Turbines.

Objective

In the present project we plan to improve the energetic of gas turbines. This task will be accomplished by developing improved abradable seals to reduce the shroud/rotor gap in order to reduce back flux of gases in the high temperature combustion region of the turbine. These materials will have to be able to resist to high temperature, erosion, and oxidation, as well as to provide easy and controlled abrasion. They will also have to be cost effective and show the possibility to be manufactured by methods compatible with industrial manufacturing.
Our calculations show that by means of these materials the turbine efficiency can be increased of at least 1% over present day technology that is providing an overall efficiency improvement of 0,3%-0,5/ depending on the engine size. This improvement will result in a reduction of CO2 emission in the atmosphere of at least 0,2-0,3 MTons/Year and higher as the technology is adopted worldwide.
