Obiettivo This feasibility study has a final goal of reducing the cost and time of analysing seawater samples for the presence of noxious and toxic Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) species. The outcome is a definition of a project that will engineer a buoyed monitoring system for HAB species. It will comprise an automatic sampling system coupled to an innovative imaging device, which will sit in a buoy at an aquaculture production facility. The buoy will communicate with a base station by radio link. Images sent by the buoy will be analysed by an advanced neural network categoriser. Several key engineering challenges still need to be solved before this system concept can become a reality. This proposal will define the requirements of such a system, in concert with market needs and other drivers. In the future, automated buoy sampling and analysis could replace the existing labour intensive inspection methods, which are used world wide.
