Establishing traceability for cod (Gadus morhua): determining location of spawning and harvest

Objetivo

Our project will develop the methodology to establish the origin of cod. We will first optimise techniques that can be used to determine the location of spawning and of harvest of individual cod during different times of the year. Next, we will test the permanence of spawning and harvest markers using transplantation experiments between countries. A double-blind experimental design will next be used on a collection of wild and farm-reared cod from the major EU basins to define the limits at which our techniques are useful for traceability.

Finally, we will place our findings in a user-friendly format for potential end-users in the EU community (Fisheries Managers, Seafood wholesalers, and others). This will involve synthesising our findings with EU Common Fisheries Policy and law, running a cost-benefit analysis, and presenting the results a dedicated forum our methods could then be quickly transferred to other targeted species in EU waters. Objectives will be achieved through a three-year R&D project.
