Objective Recent developments in the Life Sciences have major implications for our future. These advances inspire both fascination and fear; the disquiet of our fellow citizens translates their attitude to, and expectations of, scientific progress and raises questions of an economic, social, religious, and ethical nature. There exists an urgent need to set up new forums of dialogue and education to bridge the gap between Biosciences and the general citizen. This is the goal of the innovative programme presented here, based on 4 complementary and interactive elements: a monitoring system (barometer), a major annual symposium, a network of regional and European mobilization channels, an Web site. With the involvement of French, Italian and Swedish partners, SCIENCE GENERATION has the objective of creating the basis of a European citizens network, a kind of European instance for dialogue with the public on the issue of Bioscience.
