Corticosteroid therapy of sepsis and septic shock

Objective

The use of corticosteroids in patients with septic shock is controversial. There is an urgent need for more transparency and a European harmonisation of standards of diagnostic testing and therapy . This project will develop three tools that make diagnosis and treatment of sepsis more beneficial:
1 . a Europe-wide diagnostic testing system;
2. a consensus statement of diagnostic criteria for adrenal insufficiency;
3.recommendations for corticosteroid therapy in septic shock. Products are the result of three groups of activities:
1. The compilation of empirical data by medical staffs in 40 centres of 15 countries in four European regions;
2. An analysis of adrenal gland diagnostic test harmonisation and validation, analysis of immune interactions, and a benefit analysis of corticosteroid therapy in septic shock;
3. A valorisation process that finalises the products with operational guidelines and initiates a process to refine the tools and keep them up to date. The work will be performed by consortium of experts in intensive care, infectious disease, microbiology, endocrinology and ethics.
