Recombinant vaccines for fish disease

Cel

In 1993, the global aquaculture industry produced 23% of the world's food fish at an estimated market value of 40 billion euros. As the world population increases and oceanic fish stocks dwindle the gap between supply and demand must be filled by aquaculture, and yet up to half of all farmed fish succumb to infectious disease. Induction of immunity is the best strategy for protecting farmed fish against disease, but effective vaccines are not yet available against most of the important viral pathogens. The applicants have already developed the first effective recombinant subunit vaccine for aquaculture. An Exploratory Award is sought to fund preparation of a CRAFT scheme application and the assembly of a consortium of partners who will develop subunit vaccines against fish pathogens with the greatest impact on the European Industry. The proposed research will result in improved disease control in aquaculture, resulting in increased productivity and profitability within the industry.
