Habitat adaptations in salmonids, effects of intra and inter specific competition

Objectif

Give below a brief summary of the research objectives and content of the project. Also describe briefly the training content of the proposal. Use plain typed text, preferably in English, avoiding formulae and other special characters. Salmonids are important species of high economic value and stocking occur in the whole of Europe. Adaptation to local conditions and competition between species may cause this stocking effort to yield less than anticipated in return.

However, little is known about the scale and nature of adaptive variation in stream living salmonids. By performing interdisciplinary research involving expertise from Universities in Goeteborg, Sweden and Cardiff, UK we will be able to study both behavioural and physiological adaptations as well as genetic variation within and between species. In the first (I) of three interrelated parts the competition between salmon and brown trout will be investigated in different environments.
