MEASUREMENTS OF BIOGENIC NONMETHANE HYDROCARBON EMISSIONS FROM VEGETATION REPRESENTATIVE OF EUROPEAN ECOSYSTEMS

Ziel

The objective is to better understand the formation of photochemical pollutants by natural emissions of hydrocarbons.
The studies completed on this project significantly contribute to the effort of generalisation of biogenic emissions. This is needed for understanding the impact of natural hydrocarbon emissions on the pollution climate of Europe.
Several methods and analytical techniques are developed to measure natural hydrocarbons emitted by different types of vegetation. These include micrometeorological gradient techniques for determining emission rates from grassland, cereals, and species occurring in the Iberian Peninsula such as pine, eucalyptus, olive, etc and coniferous forests typical of the countries involved in this project. The work requires complementary investigations in the laboratory and in the field by 6 different institutes.

After a first phase devoted to the identification of suitable field sites, the development of emission measuring techniques will take place along with the development of laboratory stress assay and field studies. Associated meteorological measurements will allow calculation of surface exchange rates.
