SEISMIC TRANSVERSE WAVES DEVELOPMENT OF OPTIMAL TECHNOLOGICAL PROCEDURES FOR THE RECORDING PROCESS AND INTERPRETATION

Objectif

The aim of the project is to study the lithological and petrophysical evolution of the dogger carbonated reservoirs (depth about 1 300 metres) and the rhetian clay-sand reservoirs (depth about 2 200 metres) in the eastern sector of the Paris basin, thanks to the variations in the ratio of the compression (P) waves and the transverse (S) waves emitted at the interfaces of these reservoirs.
In view of the S wave transmission quality, the study yielded positive results at the relatively shallow dogger reservoir (about 1300 m) and through the evolution of the ratio of the s-p speeds, correctly determined the lithological and petrophysical variations encountered during the drillings, thus confirming the hopes invested in the use of transverse waves. On the contrary, in the deeper (2,200 m) rhetian, the signal to noise ratio (S wave) was too low for the study to be carried to a successful conclusion.
The positive experience achieved with the dogger reservoir is an encouragement to continue the work so as to extend the field of application of the method to deeper-lying and more (subtle) targets.
The experiments were carried out at the end of 1979 on soudron reservoir. 30 kilometres of transverse reflection seismics (S) were recorded, superimposed onto older profiles already recorded in compression waves (P) for conventional exploration. The statigraphic and seismic settings were achieved by several soundings, two of which were the subject of specific measurements using vertical seismic profiles recorded with both types of wave (P) and (S), so as to ensure the best possible respective settings.
P transmission by vibrator - cover 24 - 75 m between traces.
S transmission by the marthor system - cover 24 - 45 m between traces.
