DEVELOPMENT OF SINGLE OIL WELLS PRODUCTION SYSTEMS

Cel

The project involved the development of an itinerant of an floating production, storage and transportation system for use in the North Sea, but capable of adaptation for use in other offshore areas. The special purpose vessel will be fully dynamically positioned to remain automatically on location over the subsea wellhead. Well fluids flow through a rigid riser comprising length of standard drill pipe deployed and retrieved from the vessel.
The riser handling system has been based on conventional equipment wherever possible but the comparatively shallow water operation (up to 200 m) has imposed several restraints on the design of both riser handling system and vessel. Interface between riser and moonpool is of particular concern. To minimise risk of damage and keep the size of moonpool as small as possible a carriage, running on vertical rails, supports the riser head on the centreline of the moonpool. A unique feature of SWOPS is its ability to detach itself safely from the wellhead in seconds should an emergency occur.
The subsea system has been adapted to allow commingled production from two or more wells, and reference to single well has therefore been 'dropped'. The system is now referred to as SWOPS.
The EEC contract provided support for phases 1 and 2 which covered the feasibility study and detailed design of the vessel and associated subsea controls. The specifications produced at the conclusion of phase 2 have been used for tendering purposes and contracts for construction of the first swops system (phase 3) will be placed during 1984.
