CO2 INJECTION AND RECOVERY OF CRUDE IN THE PISTICCI RESERVOIR

Objectif

Scope of the project was to ascertain through laboratory research and a field pilot test, whether a huff-n-puff process using supercritical carbon dioxide as "solvent" is able to massively improve well productivity in an existing heavy oil field, which has been exploited for some twenty years at a very low oil production rate.
Pisticci 13 well, producing since 1964, was selected to test the "huff-and-puff" technique with CO2, in the Pisticci reservoir.
PVT tests and laboratory displacement tests with C02 in slim tubes at reservoir conditions excluded any possibility of miscibility in the CO2/reservoir oil system. The first cycle started on Sept. 1985. Two complete cycles (injection, soaking and production) were run, by injecting 190 tons per cycle of CO2 at supercritical conditions.
During the production period after each injection, gas coning ,connected with the production increase, was observed. The coning was due to the presence of free CO2 in the reservoir, because of the incomplete solution of CO2 in the reservoir oil.
The benefits of lowering the reservoir viscosity was thus balanced by worsened flow conditions due to the presence of free CO2.
Three main phases.
- Reinterpretation of all existing data. Study of reservoir oil and of its mixtures with carbon dioxide.
- Work over of pilot well.
- Huff-n-puff with CO2 for some cycles (200 tons). All relevant parameter will be measured and recorded and results evaluated.
