MEASUREMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND THE STRESSES IN STRUCTURES TO ATTEMPT AN IMPROVEMENT IN STRUCTURE DESIGN

Objectif

The aim of the project was to:
- verify the scattering of the results of theoretical calculation for the jacket from the actual measured values
- identify irreversible failures of the structure
- plan the periodical maintenence inspection by means of a spectral analysis
of the records
- get a more detailed and reliable meteoceanographical report of the Central Adriatic sea.
The results of the research can be summarized as follows:
- by this project the company has successfully experienced the most suitable sensors, electronics and processing
- it has been recovered and analyzed a large amount of environmental data in order to produce a more accurate report of the Central Adriatic sea.
- it has been possible to analyze the dynamic response of the platform, mode 1 and 2, which have matched the theory with a very good precision.
- as regard to the fatigue analysis of the structure, the data recovered have shown no microcraks propagation for the 5 years acquisition period.
The main conclusion are:
a) the structure of the jacket has been calculated in a very conservative way, especially with respect to the life fatigue analysis of the platform.
b) it has been possible the tuning of the instrumentation system for the periodical maintenence inspection of the jacket.
c) it has been possible to make a new data bank as regard to the environmental factors.
The meteoceanographical and structural data acquisition system installed on Barbara platform and Ravenna AGIP base "Piomboni" consits of two different parts:
- data acquisition system (transducers)
- data transmission and recording
The transducers are composed by one anemometer, one tide meter, one thermometer, onewavemeter, to accelerometers and eight fully redundant strain gauges.
The data transmission system consits of a multiplexer equipment, analog-digital converter, a modem, a 32 kb computer, a magnetic unit and a clock unit.
The whole system operates as follows: a 20 minutes recording procedure is activated by the computer every six hours by asking data from the on-board terminal in a master slave configuration through the radio link. The computer records and preelaborates all the data regarding the 20 minutes acquisition period, which, in a reduced form, are printed in real time for operative use. In the mean time the data are recorded onshore on a magnetic support for in-house data processing. By means of a set of specially developed computer programmes the data are used to calculate the dynamic response of the platform, the fatigue suffered by 23 "knots" on the structure and the propagation of possible microcracks.
