Health systems research in urbanizing and rural settings in Thaïland

Objective

The product that is expected of this research is the identification of the conditions under which optimal health care can be ensured in Thailand. As a frame of reference for analytic study, and as a model for implementation, the comprehensive PHC approach and its structural corrolary, the district health care system, will be used. By "district health care system" we mean: a system in which the different elements are established, organized and coordinated with reference to a common objective: caring for the health of a population, with its full participation.
The study will focus on ways and means of identifying problems and desired change in the existing system using operations and action research methodologies. Three situations will be distinguished: urban, peri-urban and rural populations, keeping in mind that some or all of these are subject to rapid social and economic change.
Research activities will consist of continued analysis of the process of change: obstacles, constraints and favourable conditions for development of an adequate health care system should be identified as well as strategies
for handling these optimally. Although solutions are specific to the local situation under study, useful generalizations for policy, planning and health manpower training are expected to be drawn.
