Objectif For the people who live in Amazonia it is necessary to use the natural resources of that area but agricultural efforts have always suffered from inadequate knowledge of site properties and unappropriate management practices. The present proposal will provide original data to help to direct food production and silviculture to those areas where these activities are most productive and least destructive. The proposal forms a coherent network of interactions among fundamental research, applied research and local authorities. The priorities of the STD programme are met by giving the first estimation of the productivity and sustainability of alternative agro-silvicultural systems in different site types. The research plan contains several original approaches that combine geological and biological knowledge to gain new understanding of the ecological constrains of agricultural production. It helps to find realistic alternatives to migratory farming in Amazonia by 1) determining the geological background for the existence of sites with different production potentialities, 2) developing a model for the identification of edaphic differences utilizing ecological knowledge of indicator plant species and 3) promoting the development of appropriate farming systems for the different site types. The proposal is presented by researchers representing five institutions from four countries. The coordinator of this proposal has got the appropriate management experience and possess a productive career as a scientist specialized to ecological research in Amazonia. Also the other leading scientists have extensive field work experience in Amazonia. The proposal thus gains the special attraction of contemporary scientific expertise being engaged in development oriented research. Because also the national natural resource authorities participate, an effective distribution of the new information to those who are in charge of landuse planning is guaranteed.
