Obiettivo The aim of this project is to power a Smokeless Coal Briquetting Plant using Wind Energy. This will be achieved by adapting the wind farm to suit the operation of the plant. This would lead in the longer term to the much sought cheap technology to store wind energy.Correlation with Bellacorrig, Ireland's only operational windfarm, shows a 37% greater wind resource, which confirms projected turbine outputs.Three years Wind Data gives a mean wind speed of 8.9 m/s for the site.The proposed wind farm will consist of 2 x 600 kW turbines to be erected on Altogowlan Mountain (grid reference G90 20) at a height of 430 m on the site on an old worked out opencast coalmine. There is a network of roads in the area, constructed during the mining operations. Situated approximately 4 Km to the East of the site is a Power Station.The project will be carried out in five stages.1. Site Preparation : This will include upgrading the existing roads, leveling the site and laying the foundations.2. Design Project : The briquetting plant is completely computerised and this existing system must be linked to the wind farm computer.3. Construct & Erect Turbines : The turbines will be manufactured by Vestas.4. Connect Systems : A 10 kV line between the wind farm and the briquetting plant will have to be installed. This work will be carried out by the Electricity Supply Board - (the Irish Utility).7. Monitoring & Disseminate : We have been recording the wind speeds on themountain since February 1991. To date the average for a year has been 9 m/s.The project will be monitored for the Thermie Program.AWC Ltd and Vestas have been approved as partners in the project.
