Objective To demonstrate an application of a wind turbine supplying power in both grid connected and autonomous operation connected in parallel to two diesel generators installed in Emden in FRG. Innovation lies on the special control system. Integrated heat exchangers will be used to recover the diesel engine waste heat.A Suedwind 30 kW wind turbine will be installed next to a sewage plant in EMDEN, in order to supply electric and thermal energy for its operation. The system comprises two 25 kW diesel fixed synchronous generators, heat exchangers and is capable of grid connected or stand-alone operations through a fully automatic management system. The wind turbine is a 3-bladed, downwind type machine with 12,5 m rotor diameter and 30 kW maximum power output. The most innovative component of the entire system is the control and energy management device which was developed by Wuseltronick enabling grid connected as well as autonomous wind/diesel systems. The use of synchronous generators for both the wind converter and the diesel unit, the system is also able to contribute to the stabilization of a week public grid.During the 2 years of the demonstration phase it will be possible to evaluate and further optimize the operation of the combined system wind/diesel/heat exchangers.
