Objective To design, manufacture, install and demonstrate the operation of a 500 kW WT under Greek wind conditions and seismic environment.Innovation lies on the uprated 500 kW Nordtank wind turbine.An upwind, 3-bladed, 500 kW wind turbine with 37 m in rotor diameter and 35 m tower is going to be designed and manufactured in Denmark by Nordtank. The wind plant will be transported to the Lavrio, 60 km SE of Athens, where will be installed and connected to the grid. The wind turbine will be equipped with an ASEA 500 kW asynchronous generator rated at 690 Volt, 50 Hz and 1500 rpm. A telecontrol system will be included for the operation and monitoring of the turbine. For the realization of the project the proposer is collaborating with Public Power Corporation. The annual yield is estimated at 1450 MWh, given that at the site of installation the annual mean wind speed is 6,5 m/s (at 10 m height).At present the project shows a payback time of 18 years but it will be reduced to about 8 years when produced in series.
