The effect of vehicle inspection and maintenance on energy consumption and the environment

Objectif

- To achieve savings in energy consumption through maintenance of vehicles of some 7% as a result of the inspection procedure designed.
- To bring pollutant emissions from vehicles in use in line with established limits.
- To gauge the limits of emissions (CO2, CO and HC) above which consumption is excessive.

- To carry out the indirect testing of vehicle fuel donsumption and pollutant emission by means of a two stage "short cycle" procedure aimed at use in the Technical Inspection of vehicles.
- To correlate the "short cycle" method with emission measurements proposed in Directive 92/55/EC relating to the periodic inspection of vehicles in use.
- To determine the engine and vehicle parts and functions which are most likely to contribute to increased fuel consumption in order to improve periodic maintenance.
- to establish simple operating procedures for measuring vehicle condition in terms of energy consumption and pollutant emission, for use in other Vehicle Inspection Stations.
