Objectif
The proposal aims to further develop string theory as a unified theory of the physical forces in order to understand its physical implications. The specific research programme focuses primarily on the non-perturbative extension of the theory, also known as 'M-theory', in order to unravel its underlying physical and mathematical principles. This is essential for determining how the theory describes quantum space-time, and is necessary for understanding its applications to elementary particle physics and early universe cosmology. The participating groups possess complementary expertise in areas of quantum field theory, general relativity, particle physics and cosmology, as well as in string theory.
The overall aims of the proposal divide naturally into a number of projects, each exploiting the specific talents of a subset of the nodes. Regular interaction between the nodes, in the form of small workshops and larger Network meetings, is intended to ensure consolidation of the results of individual nodes into the overall research aims of the Network. The postdoctoral researchers will play a significant role in the research of each node and in communicating results between the nodes. The Network intends to foster the training of graduate students in order to ensure continuation of the traditional excellence of young researchers in this area of theoretical physics.
