Objetivo TO STUDY THE TEMPORAL VARIATIONS OF ATMOSPHERIC TRACE GASES (CO2, CH4, N2O). MEASUREMENTS WOULD BE CARRIED OUT ON DIFFERENT ANTARCTIC ICE CORES ALREADY AVAILABLE.FURTHER MEASUREMENTS MAY BE POSSIBLE AFTER THE AVALAIBILITY OF ICE CORES FROM THE ARCTIC REGION AS PROPOSED IN THE COLLABORATIVE PROJECT EUROCORE.IN THE CASE OF CO2 MEASUREMENTS WE WILL FOCUS OUR EFFORT ON SELECTED TIME PERIODS WITH HIGH DENSITY OF DATA POINTS. ONE PERIOD IS THE RECENT PAST INCLUDING THE LITTLE ICE AGE WHICH HAS BEEN CHOSEN TO DETERMINE THE ABSOLUTE VALUES AND THE POSSIBLE TEMPORAL VARIATIONS OF CO2 WITHIN THE PRE-INDUSTRIAL PERIOD. INTENSIVE MEASUREMENTS WILL BE PERFORMED FOR THE CLIMATIC TRANSITION PERIODS OVER THE PAST 150,000 YEARS, DURING WHICH LARGE VARIATIONS IN BOTH CO2 AND CLIMATE ARE RECORDED.MEASEREMENTS OF CH4, N2O, CO AND H2 WILL COVER A PERIOD INCLUDING THE LAST ICE AGE TO PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE LONG TERM TREND OF THESE SPECIES. THE OBTAINED RESULTS WILL BE COMPARED WITH THE CLIMATIC RECORDS MEASURED ON THE SAME ICE CORES AND FROM THAT THE FORCING FACTORS CORRESPONDING TO THE OBSERVED RADIATIVELY ACTIVE GAS VARIATIONS WILL BE INVESTIGATED. THE PROJECT INCLUDES: A) IMPROVEMENT OF EXISTING ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TECHNIQUES FOR EXTRACTION AND ANALYSIS OF THE AIR TRAPPED IN THE ICE, B) MEASUREMENTS OF THE TRACE GASES IN DIFFERENT ICE CORES, C) EVALUATION OF THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE CHANGES IN THE CONCENTRATIONS OF THE ATMOSPHERIC TRACE GASES THUS DEDUCED AND THE CLIMATIC CHANGES.
