Objetivo Promotion of a thermo-electric micro-station to cover the heat and part of the electricity requirements of a 10 flat building. The payback time of the project is expected to be 16 years. It is strongly dependent on the possibility of purchasing electricity from the public network. In 1988, construction of the building was completed; the components of the thermo-electric station were ready but not installed. The main features of the project are as follows:1. A combined heat and power (CHP) engine with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The CHP group (39 kW thermal output and 15 kW electrical output) is used during peak hours of electricity demand of the public network.2. A heat pump of 21 kW thermal output. The cold source is constituted by a 82 m2 concrete solar collector (a part of the building structure) and by a 8 m3 water/ice latent heat storage. On the warm source side, heat is transferred to the heating installation of the building, including domestic hot water (DHW) and ventilation. The heat pump is used during off-peak hours of electricity demand. It is driven by an electrical engine linked up with the public network.3. The building envelope is designed in order to have as less heat losses as possible (G = 0. 81 W/m3/deg. C of which 0. 31 W/m3/deg. C for the air renewal). Space heating demand is calculated to be B = 0. 52 W/m3/deg. C.4. Expected yearly energy consumptions areas follows (all figures in primary energy): (i) conventional system:electricity (peak hours) 20. 5 MWhspace heating and DHW 84. 6 MWh ----- 105. 1 MWh(ii) project:LPG 21. 4 MWhelectricity (off-peak hours) 24. 7 MWhsolar 59. 0 MWh ----- 105. 1 MWhEnergy savings are therefore expected to reach 56% of the consumption of the conventional system but on an economical point of view, the purchasing of electricity by the public network has to be taken into account to evaluate the payback time.
