AUTONOMOUS WIND-DIESEL SYSTEM FOR WATER PUMPING

Objetivo

Construction and demonstration of a remote pumping system for specific applications and irrigation in agricultural areas using a 30 kW wind turbine and a 18 kW pump with an induction motor. A 20 kW diesel generator will be used in order to form an autonomous system.
Technically successful project as it enables the synchronization of the 30 kW WT with the 20 kW diesel engine.
The results have been very encouraging in both system behaviour and reliability, obtaining good availability and production figures.
Up to 15.4.92 the Wind Turbine generated 30 MWh while the diesel engine 9,5 MWh.
These figures are lower than the initialy estimated, due to the fact that the measured AMWS was 4,9 m/s which is much lower than the 6,5 m/s initialy expected.
The project has not been reproduced anywhere yet. If the cost is brought down, market openings are possible in the future.
A 12 diameter 3 bladed, 30 KW wind turbine has been constructed by ECOTECNIA and was installed at Castilla-La-Mancha, at a site with about 4.5 m/s mean annual wind speed. The wind turbine has fixed pitch, is stall regulated type with a self-activated generator of 15 KW nominal power and 25 KW maximum. The machine will be connected to a centrifugal type pump with a 18 KW induction motor and with acceptable performance at 30-50 Hz frequencies. A 20 KW diesel machine is used during the non-windy periods when pumping will be imperative and during the very windy ones in order to regulate the wind turbine rotations.
The possible operational modes of the system are :
a) wind turbine and pump
b) wind turbine, pump and diesel
c) pump and diesel
During the demonstration phase, it will be possible to evaluate the degree of autonomy of the system and the perfromance of the wind turbine. The estimated annual yield of the wind turbine is 56 MWh, and of the diesel generator, 18 MWh.
