Objetivo To produce new thermal and acoustic insulating panels from low cost recycled raw materials principally cellulose (waste papers, ...) straw,... without any binder. Annual energy saving is about 1.150 TOE and payback time is 1,8 year.The project may be considered as a technical and economic success.However, several adaptations were necessary during the initial operational phase: - add a hammer-mill after the straw-cutter to get pieces of straw small enough - improvements in the dryer furnace performance which had not been designed according to the specifications - addition of a heat exchanger on the exhaust air of the dryer to improve the global thermal yield and recover heat for space heating - design of a system to collect and recycle the dust produced during the process.Due to a performance of the dryer being lower than expected, the annual production of panels will be consequently lower than foreseen, with a corresponding decrease in the annual energy savings. However, the economic viability remains satisfactory.A manufacturing licence for the manufacture of these products is available, under certain conditions, from the contractor.The process for the panels can be divided into eight separate phases.- Preparation of raw materials : waste papers, straw (or other vegetables wastes), water, fireproofing products- Preparation of the paste in a pulper- Homogenization of the paste by mechanical mixing- Forming the panels- Drying in a tunnel kiln- Gauging and sanding down the panels- Pasting and covering the two faces with cardboard and pressing- Machining before utilizationTotal capacity of the plant is 750 panels/day that is to say 540.000 m2/year.Innovative aspect is relative to the production of insulating panels with low cost raw materials without any significant consumption of energy.
