IMPROVED PART LOAD CAPACITY CONTROL OF SCREW COMPRESSORS BY TWO SPEED DRIVE SYSTEM

Objetivo

The overall purpose of the project is to demonstrate that the net electrical power consumption of standard electrically driven air compressor, operating on partial load, can be significantly reduced by the use of an automatically controlled two speed drive system.
The contractual work program was respected only in the case of the first two phases of the project, i.e. phase 1 - demonstration design, phase 2 - confirmation of additional manufacturing cost. Whilst the other project phases have been considerably delayed in the manner summarized hereunder : phase 3 - manufacture and assembly of prototype : the contractual term was within December 1981 and has been deferred to 15-11-82; phase 4 - experimental test and phase 5 - reporting and design for production, envisaged within June 1982 have been deferred to May 1983.
The demonstration compressor will have a capacity of about 114 kW: in a typical application, for an air requirement equal to 67% of total capacity, a normally regulated compressor (by throtling the inlet air flow or through the "automatic start-stop") would consume about 100 kW, whilst with this speed regulation it can be reduced to about 80 kW.
The effectiveness of the proposal will be demonstrated by five successive phases :
- carry out the detailed demonstration design
- estimate the cost of mass production
- make and assemble the experimental demonstration equipment
- assess the operation of the demonstration equipment through performance and endurance tests
- confirm costs of mass production.
