Building and Environmental Aerodynamics: Training, Research and Interchange of Expertise

Objetivo

The general objective is to build a continental world-wide qualified research and training pole in the field of Wind Engineering, i.e. of the effects induced by the atmospheric wind on the environmental buildings, structures and infrastructures of primary importance (life-lines).

The main activities of the created European pole are:
- training of young post doctoral or advanced post-graduate scientists;
- research work on joint projects in several specific fields (bridge aerodynamics, wind tunnel simulation of windborne pollution, climatic wind tunnel, Computation Fluid Dynamics);
- interchange of expertise and visits by senior researchers.
A European network in wind engineering, denoted BEATRICE, has been established connecting 7 world-leading research centres. In these centres, several scientists and postgraduate students work on the effects induced by the atmospheric wind on the environment, on buildings and other structures (in particular, long-span bridges, tall antennas, cooling towers, etc), and on infrastructures of promary importance (lifelines). Exchange visits, study periods and conferences have allowed the integration of knowledge and capabilities, to train a significant number of new internationally qualified research workers, and to start common projects on bridge aerodynamics, wind tunnel techniques, computational fluid dynamics, etc. The institutions involved now share a common feeling that makes collaboration easy and fruitful, and are ready to put their expertise at the disposal of interested parties.
