Condition Monitoring, stress analysis and full-scale fatigue testing of R&D wind turbine blades

Objetivo

The objective of this proposal is to include the contributions of the Bulgarian Academy of Science and the University of Riga in the experiments being performed during the next 18 months. The contribution of the Bulgarian Academy of Science will provide vital information about the shape and deformations of the fatigued specimens using their Laser-inferometric methods. Similarly, the University of Riga will provide vital information regarding changes in the microstructure as damage progresses. Both methods are complementary to those being used in the project at present. A comprehensive set of mechanical and thermal time series measurements will allow the detailed properties of the composite materials being tested to be determined throughout the life cycle of the Specimens. The findings of those measurements will allow the individual condition monitoring techniques to be calibrated in a quantitative manner. The fatigue testing of simple specimens at specific, analytic load cases will be undertaken collaboratively with all institutions being involved. The utility of the combined NDT methodology will be demonstrated firstly by the fatigue testing of plate specimens, at City University London, and finally on a full scale blade test at the University of Delft. The life cycle characteristics of the plates will be monitored and the limitations of the various methodologies established. Proof of concept for combined monitoring methodology will be performed on a full blade test.
