Cel To increase the understanding of the dynamics and degradationprocesses of Mediterranean ecosystems. To provide a model ofvegetation dynamics at a range of spatial and temporal scaleswhich can be used for evaluating the impact of changing climateor of different land-use policies in these regions.The study is based on the premise that the prevention andreversal of desertification depends on an understanding of theprocesses which determine vegetation structure as it is the plantcover which protects the soil from erosion and determinesecosystem function. This project will quantify the interactionsbetween the major components of Mediterranean vegetation andproduce a model to predict system behaviour at the landscapelevel.Vegetation patterns and ecological attributes of the maincharacter species in degrading and aggrading vegetation inMediterranean environments will be assessed. A modular modellingapproach will then be used to scale up from a dynamic,time-dependent simulation of plant species behaviour to the levelof the landscape thus bridging the gap between species-level andGIS-orientated models. The processes identified will be definedand modelled in a way which complements other ongoing EC-RTDprojects at the regional scale. The model will respond to avariety of disturbance regimes and its use will result in animproved understanding of ecosystem disturbance and will providea basis for management prescriptions at the local and regionalscales.The model will help the development and implementation of landuse policies throughout the Mediterranean region. It will alsobe used as a means of planning effectively for the survival ofecosystems and for reversal of desertification processes. Areference point and database for relevant information will alsobe established for the region.
