Objetivo The aim of this research project is to propose a technique for recycling such chromium-containing wastes suited to the economic and technical circumstances of the works and Member States.Chromium is one of the main basic metals used in stainless steel works and is also used - on a smaller scale, but in no mean quantities - in other works producing low-alloy steels. As a result, waste from such plants, especially melting furnace dusts and mill scale, contains chromium, whose carcinogenic and toxic properties have led the authorities to introduce legislation to protect surface and ground waters (national regulations, draft European directive) and, in certain Member States, to ban dumping of such wastes. The draft directive of the European Commission ,in particular, is highly restrictive. The works affected find these new regulations a major constraint, since - given the present-day state of technology - they are forced to dump such wastes at controlled disposal facilities, which, if such sites exist, costs more.In addition to this particular negative aspect of dumping, there must be added the resultant loss of very expensive noble metals such as chromium itself and the nickel and molybdenum generally associated with it.The research aims to:- determine the state of the art in pyrometallurgical recycling of chromium-containing wastes;- explore hydrometallurgical methods.
