Objetivo
The project aims at:
- Improved measurement of rainfall using weather radar.
- Use of radar for rainfall forecasting.
- Application of radar rainfall measurements and forecasts for flood warning and control.
- Development of methodologies for storm hazard assessment using radar data.
- Application for urban storm water management.
The following developments have to be performed in order to achieve the announced aims:
- Complementarity of radar of different wavelength investigated using overlapping radar, raingauges and distrometers;
- Development and assessment of radar correction algorithms using field data and numerical simulation;
- Use of distrometers for on-line radar calibration and for the investigation of the spatial heterogeneity of the rainfall-reflectivity relation;
- Assessment of doppler and dual-polarisation radar and implementation of a new correlation parameter for use with dual-polarisation radar to identify hail, melting snow (the "bright band") and anomalous propagation;
- Development of radar data processing, storage and display systems;
- Develop algorithms to make high resolution forecasts of spatial rainfall amounts suitable for use in rainfall-runoff models for flash flood forecasting.
- Development of new grid-square models for flood warning and control. GIS techniques and digital terrain models will be used to support parametrisation of the grid-square models;
- Develop improved flood design methods for reservoirs and drainage systems which exploit the availability of spatio-temporal radar rainfall data;
- Development of procedures for forecasting and mitigating the effects of storm-produced flooding in combined rivertidal systems.
