Computer-aided learning of lexical functions

Objetivo

The objective of the project is the development of a marketable product in the area of Computer-aided language learning (CALL). The program will enable a user to improve his/her lexical competence by navigating through the vocabulary via so-called lexical functions. A prototype of the program has already been developed under the guidance of Professor Yurii D. Apresian at the Computer Linguistics Laboratory of the Institute for Information Transmission Problems (Russian Academy of Sciences). The prototype has a lexical base of some 300 words for Russian and English and a list of some 50 lexical functions. It was tested in a number of experiments and proved its value for research.

In the course of the project, the lexical base for Russian will be considerably enlarged and a completely new German component will be drawn up. Due to bilingual lexical support, the learner will be able to navigate through each language independently or through the mediation of his/her mother tongue. The architecture of the system will ensure easy inclusion of other languages and constant updating of lexical material. The resulting lexica can be used not only in the framework of the CALLex program, but for far-reaching research purposes as well, since they offer a wealth of multilingual lexical material organised in an entirely innovative theoretical and lexicographic framework.
