Mathematical and statistical research in information theory and telecommunications

Objetivo



Three research teams from the NIS and two from the Benelux will jointly investigate several outstanding research problems in information theory and telecommunications.

The research is divided into four main areas: source coding theory (data compression); channel coding theory; network information theory; and statistical information and communication theory. In source coding theory research will be carried out on the context tree weighting algorithm for universal data compression; the successive refinement problem in rate-distortion theory; and universal source coding subject to a fidelity criterion. In channel coding theory the investigations will focus on the complexity-performance relation for communication over AWGN channels with noisy feedback, and coding for channels with localised errors.

In network information theory the research problems relate to investigation of the E-capacity for communication systems, finding the capacity region of the binary multiplying two-way channel, the determination of the capacity region of the broadcast and interference channel, and establishing asymptotic expressions for the capacity of communication systems with almost Gaussian noise.

In statistical information theory the research will concentrate on exploring the implications between minimum description length, universal source coding and distribution estimation, the behaviour of Fisher information under random perturbations, and parameter estimation in the presence of side information about remote data. These problems are of great theoretical interest and their solutions are expected to have significant applications in practical data-communication.
