Objetivo
The objective of EPSYLON is to define, implement and validate a new software for managing process information, allowing manufacturing firms to achieve,
- Improved management of process data - the system will allow enterprises to capture, understand and formalise knowledge of their shop-floor processes;
- Control over complementary operations - the system will support documentation, planning and monitoring of non-manufacturing operations such as recycling and maintenance;
- Improved planning and decision-making functions - the common process representation will provide a unified, detailed and updated reference for both operative and strategic decision-making.
The project is inspired by two main considerations, (i) Shop-floor processes are growing ever more complex, under the impact of factors such as, increased relevance of complementary tasks, running in parallel with the main production flow (eg prototyping, tooling, maintenance and quality control), higher flexibility required in shop-floor operation in terms of frequent re-configurations, number of parallel tasks, and shared personnel, and, arising 'green' manufacturing concepts, ranging from disassembly and disposal of take-back productions, to 'on-line' recycling of wastes and defective pieces; and (ii) current process models fail to capture and integrate all the knowledge elements necessary to describe this complex scenario, taking into consideration only the main production flow and do not adequately representing activities that run in parallel with normal production. In response, EPSYLON aims to produce,
- A process modelling software with advanced primitives (e.g. generalised resources and operations, cyclical and alternative process paths, parameter based process configuration);
- A short-term planning and control software based on the enhanced process representation;
- A concurrent operations software supporting reverse manufacturing processes such as recycling, repair or disposal, and auxiliary processes like maintenance, inspection, and tooling;
- A simulation and analysis software for evaluation of alternative shop floor configurations, 'green' manufacturing options, and introduction of new procedures.
