Dispersion of two-phase flashing release - field experiment

Objetivo

To perform large scale dispersion experiments with a two-phase jet of liquefied ammonia.

This project centres on measurements of large scale releases of ammonia at an experimental site in Sweden.

These type of releases are dangerous as the ammonia is toxic and in this form heavier than air. Releases will therefore stay close to the ground where they have a high chance of reaching workers or inhabited areas. The modelling of these releases is difficult.

The initially dense jet will gradually change to a passively dispersing plume due to the entrainment and heat transfer. Both the mean and fluctuating part of the concentration and flow field will be measured in all the dispersion phases, with special attention to the heat budget including air moisture.

The release rate, initial enthalpy, initial momentum and ambient wind conditions and other meteorological measurements will be integrated in the data set. The experiment will support the work of the FLADIS project (STEP 125) and close collaboration with this research group will be established. Development of a numerical model based on 2-D flow equations is also proposed. This kind of model will be detailed than the traditional dense gas "box" models used in risk analysis, but it will simpler and easier to run than the computationally expensive 3-D models.
