The mapping, analysis and prediction of wave climate variability to reduce operational risks in european marine and coastal environments

Objetivo

This programme will develop a comprehensive wave climatology, integrating all sources of wave data, to provide a full presentation of climate variability and to develop a new predictive capability. The safety of human activity on the oceans is highly dependant upon accurate sea state information. Incorrect, or wrongly interpreted, information can lead to delays, cancellation, and occasional failure, with major financial or environmental consequences. Accurate climate information is vital at all stages of planning. Offshore and coastal operators are now finding that existing wave climate data bases are not able to meet their increasingly sophisticated needs. The Wavemap wave climatology will be compiled from satellite observations, in-situ data, global model hindcasts, and coastal wave models. This data base will be accessed through a user friendly interface which will provide analyses of climate for coastal and offshore locations, including the ranges of variability likely to be experienced. We will develop a mid and long term predictive capability built on an understanding of the causes of variability and the nature of relevant teleconnections.
