Assessing the impact of technological innovation and globalisation: the effects on growth and employment

Objetivo

Technological change and globalization are two of the key forces of change that will shape the future of the EU economy in the new millennium. How these forces influence the overall growth and employment performance of the EU remains a largely neglected issue. Current explanations of the disappointing performance of the EU have tended to focus on macroeconomic factors, such as monetary and fiscal constraints, while analysis of the causes of unemployment tends to be limited to the operation of the labor market alone. Much can be learned from an investigation of changes in the structure of the EU economy, in terms of the pace, direction and nature of the parallel processes of technological change and globalization of production. This project aims to provide new understanding of the impact of these two major processes on economic growth and employment in EU countries, in comparison with the US, Japan and other advanced economies.
