Objetivo The EDITH project will establish a new technology of multidimensional hierarchical clustering/hierarchy interleaving. It addresses a major technical obstacle, i.e. the delivery bottleneck of reports and query results over huge multidimensional hierarchical databases. The approach of the project allows for general, flexible data management and extraction and is not limited to one specific application domain. The exploitable project results will include two products enhancements, namely an improved database kernel of TransBase HyperCube, which integrates hierarchical modelling, and an improved version of VisualMine for visualisation purposes as well as know-how on the applicability of the technology in two main application fields (retail industry and geographic information systems). Objectives: A new technology of multidimensional hierarchical clustering/hierarchy interleaving (MHC/HI) that will be subject to an application for European patent will be integrated into TransBase HyperCube which is a relational DBMS already providing multidimensional indexing. Hierarchy operation like drill-down will be optimised with respect to the underlying physical multidimensional data model. The technology will be applied to two significant application domains: in the retail industries huge data warehouses have to be analysed continuously to reflect any changes quickly for business decisions; geographical information systems deal with data that is organised hierarchically by geographic categories. The graphical front-end tool VisualMine will be enhanced in order to provide an easy-to-use human interface for navigation and analysis of the above databases so that OLAP tools find a wider applicability.Work description:Based on the multidimensional DBMS product provided by a participating SW vendor, work is divided as follows:-FORWISS is in charge of(i) advanced R&D topics (meta-data management, query language extensions, performance analysis) and(ii) giving assistance in all relevant data modelling tasks.TransAction Software (TAS) will integrate MHC/HI into its DBMS kernel, especially into the query optimiser and query processor; DDL and meta data management issues are also involved. Moreover, TAS is leading the exploitation.AI Softw@re, the participating tools vendor, will adapt its visualisation tools and the required Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) software to work with databases organised by MHC/HI with the goal to show the tools in the context of the partners' applications.ICCS will provide basic research, in query optimisation and statistics management, help with data modelling and analysis and interpretation of performance measurements.UNIXFOR and Kotsovolos will cover the most important application field data warehousing. During the project, the MHC technology will be applied to the data warehouse of Kotsovolos to demonstrate the performance gains and benefits of the technology. The port of the data warehouse of Kotsovolos will be done with the help of UNIXFOR, a SME application software company.Globema will apply the MHC/HI technology and front-end tool to the spatial data management applications. Performance and benefits of the technology in real-world environment with real data will be investigated. The partners accomplishing this R&D work are leading-edge database researchers, application software companies and users which in the first time in this area combine their knowledge.Milestones:Milestone 1 - Analysis and Specification: a specification of the implementation of the MHC/HI kernel integration and the graphic front end tool is presented.Milestone 2 - Implementation Reports: implementation reports of the MHC/HI integration into the database kernel and query processor, implementation of the query front end, analysis reports of the cost model, the query specification and database port of the Data Warehouse (DW) and GIS applications together with ETL software tool for extraction, transformation, and loading data from/into the DW.Milestone 3 - Final Review and Measurement Results: final reports on all implementations, measurement results of the application implementations with MHC/HI.
