Development of polarisation diversity and doppler radar data analysis for qualitative and quantitative precipitation monitoring in severe weather

Objetivo

The overall objective is to enable operational weather radars to
be further developed so as to provide improved severe storm
identification and flood warning system.

Development of optimal polarisation schemes will be via initially
collecting data in several polarisation schemes. Subsequent data
analysis, comparing results with ground measurement data will be
used to determine which polarisation schemes should be
investigated in depth.

Data analysis will include:

A study of the use of doppler and polarization data to identify and remove ground
clutter and anomalous propagation.
Derivation of rainrate prediction using different procedures,
rainrate prediction will
be compared with point rate-rate measurements from raingauges.
Use of doppler data from at least one overlapping coverage area of a pair of radars,
to derive wind fields and motion in severe storms.
A study of the use of polarisation, such as the combination of reflectivity and
differential reflectivity data, to identify storm regions containing hail.
Investigation of the value of doppler data for identifying severe weather such as gust
fronts, downdrafts and vortices.

Modelling will include

Creation of 2--dimensional displays of data from each radar being
operated within the proposal. Creation of 3--dimensional
display, including terrain, of data from at least one radar.
Assessment of relative merits of various polarisation modes used
for collecting radar with the DLR radar. Modelling of the
effects of propagation on the radar data is an essential part of
this assessment. Use of radar data to provide input to flood
forecasting models optimization. Conceptual models, representing
the structure and behaviour of developing convective cells will
be used to assess the usefulness of collecting polarisation data
(at C- band), to improve the performance of operational weather
radars.
