Objetivo Up to now software companies have seen knowledge management more as a market for them than an area to exploit internally. It is only recently that major software companies have started deploying internal KM initiatives that are more than technology implementations and address organisational and cultural aspects. The objective of the LEVER trial is the customisation and validation of a total KM solution (the result of the KNOW-NET, ESPRIT 28298, project) for the software sector. The LEVER consortium will perform a focused validation of KNOW-NET's results, provided by two solution providers [PLANET (EL) and KNOWLEDGE ASSOCIATES (UK)]; the adaptation of KNOW-NET in four software companies that span the whole spectrum of software-related activities [SINGULAR (EL), ALPHANOVA (UK), DEBUS (CZ) and MDA (TR)]; and broad dissemination of LEVER's KM concepts [facilitated by SEPE (EL), the Federation of Hellenic IT Enterprises].Objectives:The overall objective of the LEVER trial is the customisation and validation of a total Knowledge Management (KM) solution (the result of the highly successful KNOW-NET, ESPRIT 28928, project) in the software sector. The objectives of user companies are:- to develop knowledge and innovation-related strategies, compatible to their business strategies;- to capture, share and leverage the knowledge of employees to create business value;- to avoid "re-inventing the wheel" in various phases of software development;- to define and implement common cross-company practices for developing and using best practices;and- to set up and deploy formal organisational and group structures and processes for leveraging knowledge. The objectives of solution providers are:- to expand their KM target market by developing an industry-specific KM solution;- to fine-tune and package the Know-Net solution; and- to disseminate the trial's results to the European software industry.Work description:The approach to be followed for LEVER follows closely the phases of the Know-Net method and includes the following workpackages:1. Awareness creation about the benefits of knowledge management and its relationships to strategic as well as operational and day-to-day issues in the corporate environment.2. Strategic KM Planning, which refers to the development of a business case for knowledge management.3. Developing the Knowledge Organisation in which each user company will transform itself to a knowledge intensive organisation based on the company-specific KM value proposition derived previously.4. Measurement and Evaluation of the level of leveraging of knowledge assets and intellectual capital with a KM effort and derivation of lessons learned.5. Dissemination and Exploitation, which also includes the training of both the knowledge workers to the new processes and technologies as well as of the staff to take up new knowledge-related roles (e.g. CKOs, knowledge analysts).6. Project Management, i.e. both the administrative and technical management of the project. Each workpackage covers both the methodological aspects of the solution and the customisation and implementation of the tool. This approach is well suited for prototype-based implementations, which in turn allow for "parallel" development and customisation of the solution by the providers based on real users' needs and feedback.Milestones:M1 (KM Business Case). A KM business case, that secures senior management commitment and describes the scope of the initiative.M2 (Trial complete and Exploitation Plan). Includes the availability of the integrated, software industry-specific KM tool and the availability of a concrete exploitation plan.
