Viral hepatitis surveillance in mediterranean countries

Objetivo

In order to determine the public health impact of hepatitis C (HCV) and E (HEV) in Mediterranean countries(MC) (Algeria, Egypt, Palestine Authority, Tunisia and Turkey), research groups from MC and collaborating. countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands) will 1/develop a sentinel surveillance system to monitor the changes in HCV infection prevalence and genotype distribution 2/establish a community based cohort for longitudinal surveillance of HCV infection incidence and risk factors, morbidity and mortality in the country with the highest HCV prevalence (Egypt) 3/estimate, through mathematical modelling, the national and regional impact of HCV infection in MC 4/determine the role of HCV and HEV in the occurrence of acute andfulminant hepatitis S/improve the methods of serological diagnosis of HCV and HEV genotypes circulatingMC 6/monitor early immunological response to HCV and HEV 6/identify animal reservoirs for HEV; investigate the genomic patterns of animal versus human strains. These approaches will allow to understand better the epidemiology of HCV and HEV and contribute to the optimisation of prevention strategies.
