European research programme for improved pertussis strain characterisation and surveillance (EUPERTSTRAIN)

Objective

A European network will conduct coordinated surveillance programmes for peruses disease and collection of B.pertussis isolates, which will be characterized by means of standardized methodology to determine the extent of polymorphism. Strain profiles from historical and prospective sources will be compared to identify trends between vaccination programmes and drift of bacterial populations. Emerging "escape" mutants will be used to challenge protection of different vaccines in a respiratory marine model and will also be subjected to extended genomic analysis by multi-locus sequence typing to identify polymorphism loci. New molecular techniques will be developed to increase throughput of epidemiological typing and reduce costs. The laboratory diagnosis of persistent cough of other aetiology will be approached by means of multi-purpose arrays. In conclusion the results will provide a rational basis for further improvement of peruses cellular vaccines.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
