Active faulting of the Turan Plate from SAR-ERS images

Objetivo

The present three year INTAS-ESA joint project proposed by the Universities of Paris VI (FR) and Greenwich (UK) with the Research Institute of Seismology (TM) and the Institute of Seismology, Academy of Sciences (UZ), aims:
I - To analyse and produce maps of the active faults and seismic risk of Central Asia from the Caspian Sea to the Kopet Dag and Tien Shan ranges. This will be based on interferograms generated from ERS phase data, processing of available SPOT-P data combined with micro and macro seismological data provided by the NIS partners and ground control. These data will be compared to the hydrological network in order to understand the influence of the fault movements (uplift) to the progressive extension of the deserts in Central Asia. This work will lead to the construction of a GIS supported data base and a seismic risk map for Central Asia.
II - To implement Remote Sensing and GIS technologies in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
The University of Paris VI will manage the image processing; the University of Greenwich will manage the GIS database in collaboration with the NIS institutions. The NIS partners will provide the seismological data sets for the GIS database.
This project is an extension of INTAS members projects in Central Asia, already supported by the ESA.
