Objetivo High coal injection rates have been achieved on several blast furnaces, but only for limited periods. The aim of this project is to establish the required conditions for achieving very low coke rates (< 300 kg/tHM) and coal rate in excess of 220 kg/tHM, under long-term industrial conditions. Special emphasis will be placed on the characterisation of the process. This investigation will be carried out on blast furnaces where the injection facilities have been recently revamped and extended. Operating at high coal rates has a beneficial effect on the environment in so far as it reduces coke consumption and allows for the closure of older installations.
