Objetivo A total of four car components were studied, developed and (partly) validated: brake drum, brake disk, suspension arm and bearing cups. The primary use of the experience on materials and processes was to produce selected automotive component by forging them from A1-MMC and to demonstrate their feasibility. This was done by selective use in certain cars and/or in niche-production for special purposes. There was an interactive exchange of knowledge between the research activities and the production experience. On a wider exploitation the Al-MMC's and the forging process was expanded into other industrial sectors, such as transport (trains) and space.The proposed research of directed at manufacturing automotive parts and components by forging in aluminium metal matrix composites. These materials are interesting to the car industry because they are lighter than conventional steel component, thereby reducing weight, fuel consumption and pollution of the environment.The principal research tasks are:i) production of starting materials,ii) hot deformation experiments, microstructure investigations, forming limit diagrams and modelling work,iii) forging experiments of simple shapes incl. tooling studies, microstructure and property examinations,(iv) optimized design, fabrication and testing of selected, actual components.The consortium behind the proposal contains 1 research institute, 3 universities and 4 industrial partners: a committed aluminium producer, two forging companies and a very large auto manufacturing group. This industry group will be very effective in exploiting the results of the research in auto manufacturing as well as in other industries.
