Low cost flue gas desulphurisation (fgd) technology

Objetivo

Air pollution due to SO2 emissions is still a serious problem in Balkan states. Due to very limited economic power, they can not afford to construct normal wet limestone flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) plants. The main sources of pollution are coal fired power stations (e.g. Bosnia and Herzegovina) and metals smelting works (e.g. FYR Macedonia). The aim of the project is to develop and demonstrate FGD technology that will demand scientifically lower construction (down by 40%) and operation costs (down by 30%). The goal will be achieved by advanced modelling and optimisation of conventional spray tower and falling film absorber designs, by introduction of chemical additives - but handling waste waters COD levels within limits, handling of scaling, and by re-designing process equipment selected and eliminating excessive equipment.
