Fatigue strength of ortotropic slabs

Objetivo

The results of the first two phases of the project, which are both extensive and significant, have made a fundamental contribution to the understanding of effective bridge loads, which is necessary for fatigue strength tests, load histograms and spectra, methods of simulating traffic and the resultant stresses, the influence of dynamic effects and the finite-element calculation methods used in respect of bridge-beams. Within the general framework of this joint research project, the Italian group will be responsible for the following activities: 1. Structural numerical analysis of orthotropic slab bridge-beams using the finite-element method to determine the nominal stresses in the samples subjected to fatigue testing; 2. Construction of 6 test pieces (approximately 3.5 x 1.5 mm) for the experiments described in point 3; 3. Execution of fatigue tests at constant amplitude on the six specimens referred to in point 2, involving the attainment of three million cycles in each case and, where appropriate, the repair of any specimens in which fractures occur during testing. These activities form part of a joint programme involving collaboration with the LBF, Darmstadt, the University of Liège, the Ponts et Chaussées (Highways Department) Laboratory in Paris, the Technical University in Delft and the Transport Road Research Laboratory, Crowthorne.
