Pictures from the past: A wireless network of magic digital cameras and palmtops for archaeological travels through the time

Ziel

Recent advances in the availability of 3G cellular phones with imaging and multimedia capability and in the development of the new mobile telephone networks opens completely new horizons for the development and fruition of innovative IT tools in the domain of cultural heritage (archaeological sites and museums). Agamemnon plans to exploit 3G mobile phones equipped with embedded cameras as the input/output device making use of graphical interfaces and voice-based commands.

Agamemnon will provide visitors with a personalised, information enriched experience, while at the same time contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage. It will:
- Establish the visitor's preferences and level of knowledge by creating a Profile of the visitor
- Based on the visitor's Profile and time constraints, schedule a route through the site to include the most interesting points
- Receive from the handheld 3G embedded digital camera pictures of specific points of interest or handcrafts, taken by the visitor during his route
- Locate the visitor, by using image analysis techniques
- Allow visitor to interact with Agamemnon using voice commands and synthesized speech
- Retrieve and deliverer relevant and personalised, context-specific rich-media information from the site repository (i.e. 3d-reconstructions)
- Dynamically re-schedule the visit path
- Enable site managers, through image-based monitoring techniques, to be alerted of any specific hazardous event
- Enable site-managers to better understand their visitors behaviour and expectations

Installation of Agamemnon will not require any special hardware as it will take advantage of multimedia 3G-handsets, which by 2005 are expected to be owned by the majority of visitors to museums and archaeological sites. Traffic-sharing agreements between archaeological sites and 3G mobile phone operators will offer new revenue streams to archaeological sites, without impacting on public finances.
