MuTra Multidimensional Translation

Objective

MULTIDIMENSIONAL TRANSLATION (MUTRA): Translation scenarios today cut across the traditional interlingual, intralingual and intersemiotic categories and typically integrate modern technologies in coping with such challenges as cross-cultural knowledge management in LSP communication, transferring linear to non-linear texts ('hypertext'), switching from spoken to written modes (subtitling) as well as considering the accessibility to information for audiences such as the blind and hearing impaired communities (audio description, written interpretation).

The project addresses these multiple (multilingual, multimedia, multimodal and polysemiotic) dimensions of modern translation and raises questions as to the impact of modern technologies on the form, content, structure and modes of translation and interpretation. It integrates research in cross-cultural management, (electronic) textuality and translation methodology as 'common core' aspects of LSP communication, technical translation and audiovisual translation (including subtitling for handicapped). Its objective is:
(1) to identify and explore the interplay of the multiple translation dimensions relative to the 'common core' standards of knowledge integration, coherence, information structuring, and translation methodologies and,
(2) to train young researchers in these research methods and enhance their translation competence as well as their intercultural communication abilities and experience.

The project with partners from Austria, Denmark, Germany, Latvia and Hungary, come from the disciplines of LSP communication, technical translation, cross-cultural knowledge management, translation theory and media translation and plan to organise a series of three international conferences and a complementary intensive training course on multidimensional translation.
