Objetivo Far from stability, ÿ-decay processes of Fermi (F) and Gamow-Teller (GT) type represent a fundamental source of information in nuclear structure studies. The goal of this project is to present a broad experimental programme aiming to study a series of prob lems of physical interest by means of ÿ-decay processes. Our programme is based on the application of the total absorption technique to these kinds of problems. The total absorption technique represents the only possible method to obtain reliable measureme nts of the BGT in particular experimental situations. These situations appear mainly when beta-feeding is expected at high excitation energy in the daughter nucleus, since in these cases the conventional methods based on Ge detectors fail. The solution to this experimental problem is the use of a total absorption spectrometer, which can be constructed using a big scintillator crystal that covers 4p in solid angle relative to the source. Such a device will absorb all the energy of the ?-rays produced in the de-excitation of a level fed in the ÿ-decay. In this way, we will have sum peaks corresponding to the energy of the cascades that follow the ÿ-decay, and this gives direct information on the levels fed in the decay. The proposed studies will cover the fol lowing areas of research: applications, like ÿ-decay data for reactor heat calculations, and fundamental research in nuclear structure, like studies of p-? pairing through ÿ-decay experiments, search for shape effects from ÿ-decay studies, and ÿ-decay stud ies of neutron-rich nuclei of astrophysical interest. A large portion of this experimental programme will be carried out at Large Scale Facilities like ISOLDE (CERN) and Jyväskylä (Finland). The design and construction of a new setup is also planned, whic h will allow the study of nuclear species in which ÿ-decay competes with ÿ-delayed neutron decay.
