PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE IN EDUCATION AND HEALTH: Restructuring work and life between the state and the citizens in Europe

Objective

The overarching ambition with the research proposed here is to describe, analyse and compare knowledge "at work" among professional actors situated between the state on one side and the citizens on the other side. This is a way to consider opportunities and constraints for change as well as a means to capture issues of social cohesion and integration in Europe of today. We want to produce a more developed view on professional knowledge and organisation of work in education and health under restructuring in Europe. We plan to: - Locate our studies in seven countries belonging to different European layers and welfare state models with their specific traditions in the fields of education and health. - Review research on professional knowledge in education and health. - Produce life histories of teachers and nurses based on interviews with different generations combined with ethnographic studies of teaching and nursing at work in 14 European education and health settings. - Produce a database built on a five country survey to 11 000 teachers and nurses with a focus on work organisation, authority and expertise, which in turn will be related to compatible databases. - Describe, analyse and compare construction and use of professional practical knowledge in different work life settings in Europe. - Compare work life organisation and professional expertise and authority in restructuring among teachers and nurses in Europe. - Develop a theoretical understanding of professional practical knowledge and work life under restructuring. - Map the research arena within the current field of study and organise symposia for researchers in new and becoming member states. - Publish and disseminate research findings in different arenas for public and professional discourses on professional practical knowledge, organisational change, as well as on organisational change, professional work and social integration and cohesion in Europe.
